Co La : Blanketing Marakesh (Coco Version)

Co La follows up 'Blood Orange Crush' with the next release in the Fugitive Of Leisure series, 'Blanketing Marakesh' (Coco Version). Sub-bass, heavily reverbed percussion and ambient sounds wrap themselves around Co La's disjointed song structure, just on the edge of falling apart. Compelling.

Puro Instinct

LA duo Puro Instinct, sisters Piper and Skylar Kaplan, release debut LP 'Headbangers in Ecstasy' on 12th September through Record Makers. Sounding something like Fleetwood Mac played through a bath of warm treacle, lead track 'Stilyagi' features fellow exponent of lo-fi smooth rock jams Ariel Pink.

Rough Fields : Manila

'Manila' by Rough Fields is almost completely constructed from rescued instruments - a violin found on a tip, a rebuilt mandolin, a melodica with 15 working keys, a two string guitar, percussion made up of chopsticks and a mic in a massive box for a kick drum. That it sounds like a well rehearsed orchestra is a commendable effort in invention and a great advert for recycling.

Hard Mix : Defaults

Hard Mix releases a free LP 'Defaults' for download today, all in exchange for clicking "Like" on Facebook.

Download via dovecoterecords.com.

Dumbo Gets Mad : Elephants At The Door

Dumbo Gets Mad: Terrible band name. Great music. Amazing moustache. In the vein of other lo-fi psychedelic troupers like Ariel Pink, DGM's album covers limbo, marmalade and prawns over 10 tracks of fuzzpop rhythm and blooze. This is Bad Panda's first physical release after releasing a free digital single every Monday since November '09. Commendable stuff.

MP3:
Dumbo Gets Mad 'Plumy Tale'

Dead Drums : Fashion Defense/Human Hair

Baltimore's Dead Drums have a tape out on Bathetic containing two EP releases: last year's 'Fashion Defense' and this month's 'Human Hair'. 'Carousin USA' is particularly nice, sounding like a half-drowned 'Dreams' by the Mac.

World Tour : Sparks

World Tour have signed to Cascine, one of my favourite new labels (home to Evan Voytas, Chad Valley, Selebrities etc). Their debut release is 'Sparks', a reminder that there is hope beyond the cold, dark winter nights.

Alternative Twenty Ten Mix

While I was compiling the obligatory end of year mix, I started to lose interest as it looked pretty much the same as everyone else's list. So this concentrates on some of the less hyped/popular music that made 2010 a pleasure.

And certainly no fucking Arcade Fire.

1. Cults 'Oh My God'
2. Sam Amidon 'How Come That Blood'
3. ARMS 'Heat & Hot Water'
4. Wild Nothing 'Chinatown'
5. Evan Voytas 'Our Thing'
6. Baths 'Lovely Bloodflow'
7. Yawn 'Toys'
8. Javelin 'Oh! Centra'
9. Pursuit Grooves 'Shabaps'
10. Vondelpark 'California Analog Dream'
11. Korallreven 'The Truest Faith'
12. Gala Drop 'Drop'
13. Arp 'Catch Wave'
